As part of our partnership with Forbes magazine, read an opinion piece by Julien Moussavi, economist at BSI Economics, on the usefulness of greenwashing, particularly in relation to green finance.
Greenwashing has been a buzzword for several years now. It has recently returned to the forefront as the « responsible » fundraising movement seems to be well underway and set to continue. Sustainable funds and ESG (Environmental, Social and Governance) funds raised €120 billion in the first quarter of 2021, 18% more than in the previous quarter. According to Morningstar, which publishes these figures, this total represents more than half of European fund inflows over the period. This enthusiasm for the development of sustainable finance is good news, even if it may be accompanied by adverse effects, both in substance and in form. What if greenwashing were useful?
