Coronavirus: Could the epidemic cause a global economic crisis?

[ Interview for the newspaper 20 Minutes ]

In this article by Catherine Abou El Khair , published in the newspaper 20 Minutes earlier this week, Arthur Jurus, economist at BSI Economics, shares his views on the impact of the epidemic on the global economy.

While the US and European stock markets remain relatively stable, prices have plummeted in Asia.

As Arthur Jurus explains, the decline in Chinese activity linked to the virus will primarily affect countries that export a lot of goods and services to China (Taiwan, Hong Kong, and Thailand), but also countries whose revenues depend on the price of the raw materials they export, such as Australia, Brazil, and Chile (China is the largest consumer of raw materials, and the decline in activity is pushing prices down).

Growth is therefore being impacted globally, and the question is when prices and activity will rebound .This will depend in particular on whether or not the current epidemic can be brought under control.
