COVID-19: TOWARDS NEW MAJOR CHALLENGES

FOR EMERGING AND DEVELOPING COUNTRIES?

MAY 14, 2020, AT 11:00 AM

The global COVID-19 pandemic is causing an economic and financial crisis that is unprecedented in terms of its scale and characteristics for emerging and developing countries.
  • Africa, while currently appearing to be less affected by the pandemic, is nevertheless experiencing an unprecedented economic and financial crisis. The already complicated budgetary and debt situation is expected to deteriorate further, and debt relief initiatives will be necessary and have already been announced.
  • Emerging countries that depend on commodity exports are doubly affected by the fall in commodity prices and the pandemic. This unfortunate coincidence will spread to their non-exporting peers through various channels.
  • To tackle the pandemic crisis, governments have put in place policies to support businesses and citizens. In emerging countries, the high level of informality in the economy makes this task more difficult. We offer an update on the actions taken in the main emerging countries.

Hussein Bidawi (Toulouse School of Economics (TSE), BSI Economics), Samuel Delepierre (BSI Economics), and Alipio Ferreira (TSE, BSI Economics) will discuss these issues for 30 minutes and will be available to answer your questions.
