– Students’ COP –

« Higher education and climate: it’s time for change »

Charlotte Gardes, economist at BSI, spoke at the « Students’ COP » on January 21 at the KEDGE BS Paris campus.

A conference was held on the theme: « Higher education and climate: time for change, » which gave her the opportunity to reiterate the urgent need to integrate environmental issues into economics education.

The ecological transition is disrupting our economic, financial, and social systems. Its challenges must therefore be at the heart of all education programs. In economic terms, this means putting an end to « above-ground » teaching that does not take into account the physical and energy issues on which our entire system is based. Environmental constraints must not be limited to the environmental economy alone and implemented solely through the introduction of a carbon tax: the economy as a whole must become ecological.

The gap in education related to climate change cannot be filled in a single semester; it is far too complex a phenomenon, encompassing physical and biological issues that go beyond our « limited » scientific education. It is therefore up to higher education institutions to make up for this shortfall from the first year onwards, through a core curriculum common to all courses, and to integrate climate issues into each of the courses taught (from law to economics, marketing, finance, taxation, financial regulation, social and fiscal policy, etc.) . More broadly, the ecological transition must be incorporated into education from an early age, as well as into civil service entrance exams.

It should be noted that BSI Economics, as an independent think tank, plays a key role in this education by helping us understand the challenges posed by climate change and their impact on the economy.
